FAQ’S – WABL

What is WABL?

The Western Australian Basketball League (WABL) is WA’s premier junior basketball competition. It caters to age groups from U12 to U21 and Open Age (WABL Championship Men/Women). WABL is highly competitive, with increased expectations of players and a more challenging environment. WABL players are, therefore, expected to listen and focus on improving their basketball skills and knowledge.

When is WABL season?

The WABL season generally commences in the last weekend of April, with finals finishing at the end of September. Games are played on Sundays over an 18-week home and away season. Every team plays each other twice, and there are three weeks of finals after the regular season.

How many associations are there in WABL?

There are currently 13 Basketball Associations from both metropolitan and country regions, which extend from Joondalup to the Southwest (Bunbury)

What are the expectations on WABL players?

WABL is a year-long commitment. WABL Trials are held every year in October/November. There are 2-4 tryout sessions for each age group and teams are then selected by a selection panel and age-level coaches. State Championships are held in November and December and are also a part of our WABL selection process.

From November to March (excluding school holidays), pre-season training includes practice games, pre-grading, and grading games to determine the appropriate competition grade for each team.

April to August (also excluding school holidays) is the competition season, during which teams alternate between home and away games on Sundays. They travel around metropolitan Perth and regional WA, which may include overnight stays as required.

The finals series, played in September, determine the winner in each level of competition. Travel to different locations is required.
