WABL Recap – Round 2

Wolfpack WABL teams played their round 2 games this weekend. As a collective, Wolves teams had a terrific 23-13 record. In a weekend with most of our Champs teams matching up against Warwick at Arena Joondalup, these Champs teams had an impressive 6-2 record.

The U12 Girls were back in action and went 3-1 for the day. Our U12-Champs Girls were able back up a great first round win with a 55-11 rout of Warwick 1s. Assistant coach Mitch Walmsley said that the coaching staff was pleased with a great improvement on the defensive end, especially with the help defense and rotations in Round 2. The U12-2 Girls played a great game and also dominated from start to finish to win 42-17 over Warwick 2s. The U12-3 Girls lost to Cockburns 3s 41-20 after a slow start. The U12-4 Girls beat Slammers 2s 31-24 in a game that was close and competitive throughout.

The U14 Girls went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend. The U14-Champs had a thrilling finish to beat Warwick’s 1s by a score of 34-32 with clutch freethrows as the decider. The U14-2 Girls also had a close and competitive game, beating Mandurah’s 1s 45-43.  The U14-3 Girls beat Warwick’s 3s 47-24. A massive 16-6 2nd quarter, and a 16-3 4th quarter were instrumental in this big lead. The U14-4 Girls were also triumphant in a 61-51 victory over Rockingham. Well done to the U14 girls age group for a perfect 4-0 weekend!

The U16 Girls were also in action and went 3-1 on the day. Our U16-Champs winning decisively against the Warwick champs team. A big victory to now have a solid 2-0 start on the year. The U16-2 Girls had a rough start losing the 1st quarter 20-9 against Lakeside, but this just makes the comeback victory all the more impressive. They won the game 58-47. The U16-3 girls had a heartbreaker, losing the lead at the end, and losing the game by a single point, 77-78 to Rockingham. The U16-4 Girls played well and beat the Eagles 63-57 in a thrilling overtime game. 

The U18 Girls played quality basketball throughout Sunday, going 2-2 on the day. The U18-Champs girls were let down by a big loss in the second quarter, but aside from that, played a competitive game. Still though, they went down against Warwick 1s. The U18-2 Girls had a 98-63 win, starting things hot with a 56-29 halftime lead. The U18-3 girls fought hard on the road to East Perth 2s but came up 4 points short, 42-46. The U18-4 Girls got a win against Redbacks 3s, 51-42. The score was pretty even, 39-36 at 3 quarter’s time, but the Wolves had a terrific 4th quarter to come home with a victory.

The U21 Girls lost to Willetton 55-73, just unable to overcome a slow start in the first half.

The D-League Women got a lopsided 89-41 victory over Hills Raiders and move to 3-2 on the season now.

The U12 Boys age group had a 2-2 record for the day. The Champs boys had a terrific day, defeating Warwick 1s 88-47. Defensively, in the rebounding battles, and playing smart offense, the boys were decisive in victory from start to finish. The U12-2 boys had a heartbreaker, going up 1 late in the 4th, but losing on a late game basket in response that tipped the scales back in the favor of Warwick 2s. Wolves lost 63-64. U12-3 boys were competitive, but ultimately fell to Suns by a score of 42-61. U12-4 boys had a great first victory of the young WABL season, with a 44-39 win over Cockburn.

The U14 boys also went 2-2 for the day. The Champ Boys were dominant, prevailing 101-47 over Warwick’s 1s. The team had terrific activity level on the defensive end generating pressure without giving anything up. They got out in transition and shared the ball well. The U14-2 boys had the roadtrip all the way down to Bunbury, but they were ready to play. They had a great performance of 68-62 against Slammers 1’s. The U14-3 Boys had a close game the entire way, but unfortunately fell 3 points short in the end. The U14-4 Boys took a solid lead at halftime, and maintained a lead 11 points going into the 4th quarter. But the lead slipped away in the fourth and they ended up losing a close game in the end.

The U16 Boys went 2-2 as well on the day. U16-1s won big over Willetton 2s, going up 117-57 in the end. Coach Simon was very pleased with their progress on their press, and felt it created a lot of opportunities for the team on Sunday. The U16-2 Boys lost 84-95 to East Perth Eagles. The U16-3 Boys were successful in dispatching the Rockingham Flames by a score of 85-61. The U16-4 Boys ended up with a 59-88 loss to the Lakeside 3s, primary due to a 27-10 3rd quarter going against them.

The U18 Boys had a very solid 3-1 record for the day. The Champs team had a bit of a slow start, but got rolling in the third quarter making a big run and putting the game out of reach. They ended up winning 104-92 to the Warwick Champs team. The U18-2 Boys dropped their game 68-81, and now fall to 1-1 for the year. The U18-3 Boys prevailed 85-73 in their matchup, after an incredibly hot 32-12 start to the game. The U18-4 Boys also won, defeating Rockingham 100-89.  

The U20 Champs Men were in action, falling 77-101 to the Warwick 1s team. Team 2 had a bye.

The D-League Men impressed again, taking down the Hills Raiders by a score of 101-82. They are now 5-0 on the season.
