WBA WELCOMES THE ALKIMOS RAIDERS TO OUR JUNIOR DOMESTIC COMPETITION

The Wanneroo Basketball Association is pleased to introduce the Alkimos Raiders and welcome them to our Junior Domestic Competition.

The Alkimos Raiders are association teams managed by the Wanneroo Basketball Association and have been formed to service the rapidly expanding Northern Growth Corridor, covering areas including Alkimos, Eglinton, and Butler. The Raiders will provide more opportunities for children to play basketball and continue the WBA’s expansion into the northern growth corridor.

The Raiders will adopt a non-training model for their team’s, meaning playing is a game-only commitment. This enables players to turn up on gameday, play, and have fun without the extra commitment of a midweek training session. It also means that there is no requirement for training venues which allows for more children to play the game despite the severe lack of facilities in the area. The no training model may not suit everyone’s needs; however, the WBA’s existing domestic clubs offer training so new players wishing to train should seek a placement with one of them.

The Raiders concept was developed nearly two years ago as part of our working relationship with the City of Wanneroo to ensure a dedicated Alkimos presence in our basketball competition as plans for basketball facilities in Alkimos became a reality.

Speaking on what it means to have the Alkimos Raiders join the Junior Domestic Competition, Wanneroo Basketball Association CEO Andrew Summerville said:

“It is pleasing to see the Raiders finally come to life after some time behind the scenes while we awaited conformation of future facilities in the region. It is important for us to ensure we have access to more courts for the future of our domestic competition and we hope the formation of the Raiders is a step towards having our members play on the four courts coming at the Alkimos Aquatic & Recreation Centre.

The WBA has invested in the northern growth corridor for more than 10 years and it has always been part of our strategy to grow our domestic presence in the area. Cobras and Phoenix were essentially ‘expansion’ clubs to cater for the growing population in north Wanneroo, so the Raiders is just the next progression in our growth.

Our current domestic clubs do a fantastic job of getting kids playing but with many clubs being at, or near capacity and the ever increasing strain on volunteers and the lack of training court space; adding the Raiders will allow more players to enter the competition, ease the strain on domestic clubs and allow for gradual and sustained growth of our competition.

While the Raiders may look and feel like a ‘club’, it is important to note that the format is a little different to the traditional club format and as association managed teams the Raiders will work alongside our current clubs, compliment the role and value the traditional clubs are providing, and fill a need that may suit some of our members.”

The Raiders will play in the 2025 Winter Domestic Competition and are now taking EOI’s from potential players and coaches.

Welcome Raiders to the WBA.
