WABL Recap – Round 1

Wolfpack WABL teams were back in action to open the 2025 campaign. Several quality games and opportunities for development en route to a 22-15 record in Round 1 across all the Wolfpack teams.

The U12 Girls were back in action and our U12-Champs girls were able to prove that they are a force to be reckoned with this season. Head Coach Mark Loxley would be pleased with the balanced scoring and the tenacious defense demonstrated in Round 1. The U12-2 Girls played a great game especially in the 2nd quarter, able to muster a 14-4 2nd quarter. Ultimately the Wolfpack fell 37-41. The U12-3 Girls prevailed 48-19 over East Perth Eagles 2s. The U12-4 Girls lost in a close 23-26 game on the road at Suns.

The U14 Girls went 3-1 on the weekend. The U14-Champs girls fought valiantly against a familiar opponent in the Lakeside Lightning; an even game throughout saw the Wolves lose 44-46 at the final buzzer. The U14-2 Girls prevailed at Redbacks to the tune of 45-24 with Kyona Nelson and Aisling Fernandez each tallying 10 points. The U14-3 Girls were able to ride an impressive 18-4 3rd quarter to a 49-34 victory. Well done to Wayne Hardman and company! The U14-4 Girls were also triumphant in a  50-49 win on the road to the Redbacks. Amelia Moustafa had the final score for the Wolves to take the lead from 1 point to 3 points in the waning minutes.

The U16 Girls were also in action with our U16-Champs winning the 1st and 2nd quarters by 17 points each! We were able to win each quarter on the way to an 86-40 victory. The U16-2 Girls were impressive with 88-39 victory over the Rockingham Flames. The U16-3 girls had 5 players score 9+ points on their way to a 72-55 win. The U16-4 Girls played well but came up just shorts 44-53 against the Suns Blue.

The U18 Girls played quality basketball throughout Sunday. The U18-Champs girls played an even game with Redbacks through 3 quarters. Holly Kemp had an impressive floater off the backboard in the 3rd quarter that really gave the team some energy, however we were defeated 49-60. The U18-2 Girls proved themselves with a  30-4 1st quarter against the Eagles on their way to a 68-42 win. The U18-3 girls fought hard on the road to Lakeside but came up 5 points short, 49-54. The U18-4 Girls fell at the hands of the Magic of Mandurah. Trailing by just 3 at halftime, the Wolves were unable to mount enough points in the 2nd half to make a significant dent in the lead, falling 36-52.

The U21 Girls were successful in Round 1 to the tune of a decisive 90-70 final score. 5 players scoring double figures would keep Darryl Baxter in good spirits this week.

The D-League Women played an even 1st half with the eagles but lost some momentum in the 3rd quarter. The Wolfpack entered the 4th quarter trailing by 8 points before catching fire. The run was capped off by a buzzer beating 3 from Keisha Chng to turn a 2-pt deficit into a 76-75 victory. Way to go!

The D-League Men impressed as they have all season, taking down the Eagles 92-77. They are 4-0 on the season with their last 3 wins each by 15 or more points.

The U20 Men were in action, the U20-Champs boys winning 74-71 with plays on both ends made by Max Bennett and Kieran McNamara just to name a few. The U20-2 Men fell at the hands of Redbacks 91-116 in a spirited contest.

The U18-Champ Men had their hands full with a quality East Perth Eagles team. Jerimiah Gatluak had a nasty dunk, Taj Gleeson caught fire from 3pt range on the way to a game-high 32 points, and the Wolfpack prevailed 96-89. The 36-21 flurry in the 4th quarter was a sight to see! The U18-2 Boys were able withstand 10 3pt-shot made by the Perth Redbacks en route to a 102-94 victory. Great free throw shooting saw the Wolves make 16 free throws in the game. The U18-3 Boys prevailed 97-61 over Rockingham with 14 made free throws. The U18-4 Boys took a tough loss, on the road in Rockingham, 93-108.

The U16-Champ Boys proved too much for the Warwick Senators Green. First, jumping out to a 29-11 1st quarter lead that they were able to capitalize on, ultimately winning 102-70. Its great to see 6 players at 8+ points. The U16-2 Boys did well against a quality Lakeside team, fighting hard the whole way to come up short, 52-71. The U16-3 Boys were successful in dispatching the Lightning 66-62 with some late points at the hands of William Scott and Hayden Philbey. The U16-4 Boys entered the 4th quarter with a 1 point lead but were outscored 29-14 by the Eagles. Justin Lowson will be pleased with the effort and look forward to a bounce back game against the Lighting next week.

The U14-Champ Boys prevailed 103-64 over Eagles. The team got to the basket really well and also made 5 threes throughout the game. Always a good win when you can win each quarter, Well done to John Kingswood and company. The U14-2 boys mounted a heavy comeback in the 4th quarter, after trailing by as many as 13, we were able to get it all the way back to just a 3 point deficit at the final buzzer.  The U14-3 Boys got a bit stuck in the 2nd quarter, losing that frame 5-15 and trailing by 11 at the half. They were able to play even the rest of the game but that quarter const them with a final score of 43-53. The U14-4 Boys took the long road to Bunbury but weren’t phased, establishing a 27-25 lead at halftime. Unfortunately some 4th quarter breaks didn’t go the way of the Wolfpack and we were defeated 46-51.

The U12-4 Boys found themselves down 6-16 at the end of the first quarter. They were able to battle back to take a 37-36 to end the 3rd quarter. In the end they fell by a score of 45-51. We are excited to watch this team throughout the season. The U12-3 Boys entered the 4th quarter lead but were unfortunately unable to fend off the comeback charge of a quality Lightning side, falling 43-45. The U12-2 Boys were successful in protecting home court at Arena Joondalup. We were able to win the 4th quarter and the game each by 9 points to prevail 59-50. The U12-Champs boys were extraordinary, jumping out to a 21-4 lead to end the 1st quarter and having another impressive quarter in the 3rd to the tune of 27-10. Great Job!
