WABL RECAP – ROUND 13

Wolfpack WABL teams were back in action for Round 13 of the 2024 WABL season. There were many games that were close, which always amps up the pressure of these contests.

The U12 Girls played some great basketball on their way to 2-2 record as a group. The U12 Champs Girls managed to double up their Slammers counterparts to the tune of a 59-29 victory. Each player played well for the Wolves with Ava Turer, Aisling Fernandez, Makayla Carr, and Aya Moustafa each scoring 8+ points. The U12-2 Wolves defeated Flames 1s despite trailing by 6 heading into the 4th quarter. Shaina Sandhu, Aeris Edmonds, and Azalea Keating each had 4 points in the 4th quarter as the Wolves won the decision quarter 17-5 to notch a 41-35 victory. The 12-3 Girls mounted a ferocious comeback but fell short by just 1 point against Willetton. The U12-4 Girls had tough 3rd quarter being outscored by 7 and were defeated by just 3 points in the end. A couple of wins and a couple of narrow defeats concluded the weekend for the U12 Girls

The U12 Boys pulled off a 4-0 sweep on Sunday. The U12 Champs Boys won by a scoreline of 80-50 over Flames. The U12-2 Boys beat Warwick 47-35. The U12-3 Boys used a 20-13 3rd quarter to elevate themselves over the Suns. The U12-4 took a decisive 20-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back on their way to a 82-22 win.

In the U14 Girls, the U14 Champs girls trailed by 12 entering the final frame and were defeated 59-64. Ben Watson’s U14-2 girls team used a powerful 13-4 3rd quarter to propel themselves to a 53-36 victory over Willetton. The U14-3 Girls overcame the Eastern Suns 41-21, with Kaila Dodunski mustering 13 points. The U14-4 Girls fell to Slammers 3s 25-43.

The U14 Boys came close to an unblemished record this weekend. The U14 Champs Boys did well to stabilize after falling behind by 6 points at halftime, cutting into the deficit as the 4th quarter neared. Unfortunately we fell short by 12 points. The U14-2 Boys ended regulation tied 54-54. Charlie Killoh has back to back baskets to start overtime, but the Eagles 1s battled back to tie the score once again. It would be a  big 3-pointer by Phoenix Martin gave the Wolfpack the lead for good as they sealed the 65-62 overtime victory. The U14-3 Boys found themselves trailing 20-31 midway through the 2nd quarter and the margin remained roughly the same throughout the rest of the match, finishing 53-62. The U14-4 Boys used stifling defense to win 38-31 against Hawks.

The U16 Girls had some difficult defeats on the weekend. The U16 Champs Girls lost by 4 to Hawks. The U16-2 Girls rallied from 16 down but lost by 11. Unfortunately, the U16-3 Girls lost by 1 point to Senators. The U16-4 Girls did manage to prevail over a difficult Redbacks team, winning 47-46! Well done girls!

The U16 Boys had a triumphant 4-0 weekend. Starting with the U16-Champs Boys who took a 59-18 lead into halftime and secured a 115-61 win over Hawks. The U16-2 Boys were losing 14-22 partway through the 2nd quarter but rallied to take a 4-pt lead at halftime. They eventually won 80-69. The U16-3 Boys lead wire-to-wire cashing in on a 93-64 win. The U16-4 Boys were able to capitalize on the 17-pt lead, hanging on to win 65-63 at the final buzzer.

The U18 Women had a slew of close contests. Our U18 Champs team were defeated by 9 points. Our U18-2 Green Team secured a 1 point win over Eagles. The U18-3 White Team played 3 even quarters against Senators but a lopsided 3rd quarter proved to be too much for the Wolfpack to overcome on Sunday.  The U18-4 Girls closed a 10 point halftime deficit to just 3 points entering the 4th quarter. The Wolfpack were defeated by 10 points in the end but it was a well-played game! The close contests will surely benefit these teams as they look to turn the corner of the regular season and push towards finals.

The U18 Men had win by the U18-3s and U18-4s. The U18-3s were powered by 21 points for Hudson Rampling. Jack Goosen and Chad Jarvis scored 15 and 13 points respectively as the Wolves held on 90-85. The U18-4s won decisively 70-57 with Ethan Jongsma knocking down 4 of the Wolves 5 3-pointers on the day.

The U21 Women continued their torrid pace, winning 100-67 over Willetton. Ananya Tushir had 4 triples and she was joined with 2 apiece from Lani Purser and Charli Graziano.

The U20 Men took 2 losses by a margin of just 6 points total. The U20-Champs Men entered the 4th quarter with a 5-point lead over Hawks but feel by 4 points. The U20-2s Men suffered a similar fate, leading by 6 entering the final quarter and losing by just 2 points.  

It was a great weekend of High-Level Basketball and we look forward to more to come in Round 14! Hopefully some more of the close games go our way!
