Referee Courses

Trainee Referee Program

Our Trainee Officials start their refereeing journey by attending a BWA affiliated Association Beginner Referee course.

The WBA run 4 Association Beginner Referee courses over the year roughly in line with the school terms and encourage our officials to attend the course run by the WBA as we add information that specifically relates to our domestic competitions, our rostering procedures and outline future pathways for our officials.

Trainee officials must be 12 years of age prior to the commencement of the course, to be eligible to attend.

After completion of this course, trainees will have real game experience during our Junior Domestic Competition held at either Mater Dei College or Lake Joondalup Baptist College on Saturdays for roughly six weeks.

Each official is paired with an experienced Level 1 Referee during these games to help guide them through their sign offs to becoming a qualified WBA official. Once you have been signed off by a Referee Instructor, you can order your Green Basketball Australia Referee shirt and be able to referee for the WBA Junior Domestic Competition at one of our various venues on a Saturday.

The WBA will run an Association Beginner Referee Course in February, May, July, and October this year.

Please follow our social media (Facebook and Instagram) to be kept up to date with all announcements including course dates and registration details.

Level 1 Referee Course

After you have held an Association Beginner Referee accreditation for 12 months and are at least 15 years old, you can register for a BWA affiliated Level 1 Referee Course.

The WBA runs two Level 1 Courses per year and encourage our officials to attend our course as we include information that specifically relates to our competitions.

After attending this course, each official must complete two successful on-court assessments by a current BWA Level 1 Referee Coach and be approved for promotion by the WBA Competitions and Officials Coordinator.

Level 1 Referees must receive their successful on-court assessments on Friday night during Junior Domestic games as the level of the game must be at a standard that BWA permits.

Once you have been approved for promotion, you can order your Black and White Referee shirt through BWA and referee any of our Junior Domestic Competition games, as well as our Senior Domestic Competition.

Our next courses are planned for:

April 6th, 2025

October 26th, 2025
